Email validation API: a developer's guide

How real-time email verification APIs work, what fields to expect, and how to integrate one in minutes.

What the API checks

A good email validation API runs syntax checks, DNS/MX lookups, an SMTP mailbox probe, catch-all detection, disposable and role-based detection, and typo suggestions — usually in under a second.

A minimal integration

curl -X POST https://your-domain/api/public/v1/email/verify -H 'Authorization: Bearer bc_live_…' -d '{"email":"jane@acme.com"}'

The response contains status, score (0–100), reason, suggestion and a checks object with each signal.

Design tips

Don't block signups on 'unknown' — let them through and re-check later. Show the suggestion inline ('Did you mean gmail.com?'). Use a timeout of a few seconds and fail open.
